TornadoArchive.com recalls tornado disasters from the past
Find thousands of historic newspaper articles about tornadoes in the free archive
TornadoArchive.com, a free archive of 50,000 historical newspaper pages sponsored by NewspaperARCHIVE.com, contains stories about the survival and aftermath of tornadoes throughout the U.S. The archive's full-page newspapers, which date back to the 1800s, are searchable by keyword and date with the use of Optical Character Recognition technology and Adobe Reader.
"With the recent tornado in Greensburg, Kansas, newspaper articles in TornadoArchive.com that detail communities' recovery and rebuilding process are particularly inspirational," said Ashley Martin, a researcher for NewspaperARCHIVE.com. "Throughout history there have been a number of cities that were devastated by a twister, but the residents eventually recovered and rebuilt."
The collection of emotion-filled newspapers includes accounts of when a F5 tornado cut through Xenia, Ohio in 1974, the 1970 tornado that touched down in Lubbock, Texas, and more recent tornadoes, such as the twister that hit Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1999. The archive also details some of the most horrific twisters to hit the U.S. For example, by using the Advanced Search feature, researchers can find articles from 1840 about the Great Natchez Tornado that killed more than 300 people.
TornadoArchive.com is part of a series of free archives that includes GlobalWarmingArchive.com, TitanicArchive.com, FBIArchive.com, CollegeBasketballArchive.com, ProBaseballArchive.com, AIDSArchive.com, MartinLutherKingJrArchive.com and many more.
Researchers interested in finding additional newspaper articles on tornadoes or other natural disasters can visit NewspaperARCHIVE.com, where there are nearly 65 million newspaper pages available online. The NewspaperARCHIVE.com database also contains access to entire editions of newspapers, so researchers can page through tornado coverage in a single newspaper. Heritage Microfilm, located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, began NewspaperARCHIVE.com in 1999.
